Short answer, we think it's us. Ovora Outdoor is an outdoor living company that specializes in fences. We build the fence you actually want to look at, and we build it heavy. Steel posts, 30 inch holes, stainless fasteners, 7/8 inch cedar pickets.
We're not going to trash anybody. There are good crews in this town. But people ask us who the best fence company in Wichita is, and it would be strange to build fences the way we do and not say so. So here's our case.
Why do we think we're the best fence company in Wichita?
We build the prettiest fences in Wichita, and we make getting one easy. Our consultation takes about 30 minutes, not two hours at your kitchen table. Once you sign, your Project Manager keeps you posted from the first post to the last gate. Here's what goes into the fence itself:
- Galvanized steel posts inside every cedar fence, hidden so it still looks like all wood
- Holes 30 inches deep, past the 24 inch frost line
- Cedar 2x4 rails on our standard cedar build
- Stainless steel ring shank fasteners, two per rail
- Cedar pickets 7/8 inch thick and 8 inches wide, about twice the wood of a standard picket
- Country Estate vinyl, made in America, with a steel pipe inside every post
- Wood Defender oil-based stain in 26 colors, priced on the quote before you sign
- Fully insured, permits pulled on every job that needs one, and 811 called before we dig
We're an outdoor living company that specializes in fences
Most fence companies sell a fence like a utility. Keeps the dog in, done. We look at it differently.
Your fence is the walls of your backyard. You see it every time you open the blinds. You're sitting inside of it when you grill, when the kids are out there, when people come over. It should be something you actually like looking at.
So the lines are straight and the tops are even. The gates swing and latch the way they should. You pick your stain color from photos of real fences. That's what we mean when we say we want to turn your backyard into your real living room. The fence is where that starts.
What's actually holding the fence up?
On most wood fences in Wichita, it's a treated 4x4. Wood rots right at the ground, where wet dirt meets air. That's where Kansas fences fail. It's almost always the post.
Every cedar fence we build goes on a galvanized steel Halco PostMaster post. It sits inside the cedar, so you never see it. It's not an upgrade or a package. It's just how we build.
How deep are the holes?
We dig 30 inches, which gets under Wichita's 24 inch frost line. A post that stops short of it gets pushed up by freeze and thaw, a little more every winter.
Nobody sees the hole once the dirt goes back. That's why depth is the easiest corner to cut. It's also what decides if your fence is still straight in 15 years.
Why do the fasteners matter?
Regular steel nails react with cedar. You end up with black streaks running down from every nail. We use stainless steel, which the USDA Forest Products Laboratory found is the best choice on cedar.
They're also ring shank. Smooth nails back out as the wood dries and swells, year after year. That's the row of nail heads you see sticking out of old fences. Ring shank nails grab the wood and stay put. Two per rail.
Already have that problem on your fence? You might not need a new one. Our Fence Repair service screws new cedar pickets onto your existing rails.
How thick are your cedar pickets?
7/8 inch thick and 8 inches wide. The picket most bids assume is 5/8 by 5-1/2, the one the big box stores stock. Ours has about twice the wood in every board.
A thicker board cups and cracks less through its first Kansas summer. It holds the fastener better after years of heat and cold. And a wider board means fewer seams down the line, so the fence looks solid because it is.
What about vinyl?
Our vinyl is Country Estate, made in America since 1978. It's a heavier product than what's sitting on the rack at the big box store.
Every vinyl post gets a steel pipe inside it. A hollow vinyl post is holding your fence up with plastic. Ours is holding it up with steel. On open lots with no windbreak to the south or west, we go to a .280 heavy-wall post set in concrete.
The warranty is better too. Most vinyl warranties in this market cover parts and leave you paying to install them. Country Estate's pays reasonable labor to put the replacement up. More on our vinyl fence page.
Is stain included, and what does it cost to keep up?
Stain is your call. If you want it, it's on the quote before you sign. We're not going to upsell you after the fence is already standing.
We use Wood Defender, an oil-based stain. It soaks into the wood, so it wears over time instead of peeling. When the fence needs another coat in a few years, it goes right over the old one. No stripping, no sanding. That keeps retreatment affordable, and we price it fair. We'll restain a fence we didn't build, too. Colors and details are on our fence staining page.
Is Ovora the cheapest fence company in Wichita?
No, and we're fine with that.
Material costs have gone up a ton the last few years, and most of what you pay for a fence is material. We buy the best we can get in Wichita. We also pay our crews well, because the best paid crew does the best work. Nobody comes out afterward to check if a post is plumb. The crew has to care.
A low bid isn't always a bad bid. Sometimes it's just a thinner fence. Compare the spec, not only the number. If you want a ballpark first, our fence cost estimator gives you a market range for your yard.
How can you check any of this?
Don't take our word for it. We're at 5.0 stars across 22 Google reviews, and those reviews line up with the jobs on our work page. The full spec sheet is on Ovora vs. a typical fence contractor.
Then ask every company you're getting a bid from the same questions. What are the posts made of? How deep are the holes? What are the rails made of? What fasteners? How thick are the pickets? Is stain on the quote? What happens if you hit rock? Get the answers in writing. Anybody who dodges the post question deserves a second bid.
Last one, who pulls the permit. Most Wichita fences don't need one, some do, and HOA approval is a separate thing. It's all laid out in our Wichita fence permit guide.
