Clearwater sits just southwest of Wichita in Sedgwick County and takes its name from the Ninnescah River — from Osage words meaning clear water. The old Chisholm Trail ran along the town's eastern edge from 1867 to 1871, years before the town itself was platted in 1872. About 2,650 residents live here today — up modestly from 2,481 in 2010 — and, unlike many of its neighbors, Clearwater has its own school district, Clearwater USD 264, rather than sharing one with a nearby suburb.
