Why online fence calculators miss Kansas by a wide margin
National calculators run on national averages, and the three things that decide what a fence costs to build correctly here are all local: wind, clay and frost depth. None of them is a calculator field.
Wind. Eisenhower National Airport recorded a 102 mph gust on 17 June 2025, the highest in its record (NWS Wichita), against a residential design wind speed of 76 mph — a 90 mph three-second gust — in the adopted local code (Wichita/Sedgwick County Unified Building & Trade Code). A six-foot privacy fence is a solid sail, and every pound of that lands in the posts.
Clay. Wichita-area soils shrink through a dry August and swell with the first rain. That cycling works a post loose over a few seasons, which is why post depth and concrete volume — exactly what a cheap bid trims — are not places to save money here.
Frost. The same code lists a frost line depth of 24 inches. A footing that stops short of it gets lifted — and the “typical” post depth baked into a national calculator is often shallower than this ground requires.
Then there is what a calculator cannot see: roots along the back line, rock two feet down, the neighbor’s fence you are tying into, the easement, the drop across the yard, the gate wide enough for a mower. Every one is a real number on a real quote. The calculator is not dishonest — it is answering a simpler question than you asked.

What is the cheapest fence that still does the job?
Galvanized chain link, at roughly $12 to $30 per linear foot installed. It contains pets and children and meets most pool-barrier rules, gives no privacy, and roughly doubles in cost with black vinyl-coated fabric.

Why is one fence bid half the price of another?
Almost always the picket, the post and the footing. A 5/8-inch picket on a wood post with one bag of concrete really is cheaper to build than a 7/8-inch picket on a galvanized steel post set to 30 inches. Both are legal; only one is straight in fifteen years.
Should I trust an online fence cost calculator?
Use it to sanity-check a bid, not to budget. Calculators price a straight run on flat, clear ground with no corners, tear-out, gates or rock — which is almost no Wichita backyard.
