This cedar privacy fence in Andover runs 202 feet. We built it June 26 to 29, 2026, and stained it July 15. The photo was taken the evening the crew wrapped, so the cedar is still bare in it.
It went in on a new-build lot. Much of Andover was platted recently, so a lot of yards here start the same way: an open back line, and often an HOA approval to get first. Get the approval in hand and the line straight, and an open lot turns into a backyard.

Andover's Fence Rules: 6 Feet Back, 4 Feet Front
Andover is in Butler County and runs its own permits, so nothing about a fence here goes through MABCD. A fence permit is a zoning permit, handled under the Zoning Administrator. The Unified Development Manual requires one for any fence in a front-yard setback and lists the fee at $20. The city runs every new fence permit through plan review, with a site plan showing distances to at least two property lines. For a backyard-only fence, call (316) 733-1303 to confirm.
Section 4-103 of the manual sets the heights. In residential districts, fences can be 6 feet in any yard except a front yard. Front yards cap at 4 feet, and on a corner lot that covers both front yards within 35 feet of the front corner. Corner lots also keep a vision triangle: measure 30 feet back along each lot line from the corner, and nothing inside it can block the view between 33 inches and 8 feet above the street.
Andover also registers fence contractors, which requires evidence of insurance and a registration fee. Ask a contractor whether they're registered in Andover before work starts.
HOAs, Butler County Wind, and the 2022 Tornado
Andover is the most populous city in Butler County and much of it was platted recently, which means covenants. Cornerstone, Heritage Commons, Prairie Creek, Speyside at Terradyne and Summerlin are among the named residential developments the city itself lists. Associations in developments like these commonly require written architectural approval before a fence is built; that approval is separate from the city's zoning permit and neither one covers the other.
Andover residents do not need to be told that wind matters here. On April 29, 2022, an EF-3 tornado with peak winds of 155 mph tracked 12.75 miles through the area at a maximum width of 440 yards, causing three injuries and no deaths. Day to day the load is smaller and constant: the National Weather Service office in Wichita records an average annual wind speed of 11.5 mph for the metro, prevailing from the south-southwest, with a record gust of 102 mph on June 17, 2025.
Kansas 811 requires at least two full business days' notice before excavation, and post holes count as excavation.
