I've said this before and I'll say it again. The fence is the wall of your backyard. Everybody wants to paint and decorate their walls. Then they settle for a plain Jane fence that'll be grayed out in a few years.
If you want privacy that doesn't look like every other fence on the block, here's where I'd start. We're Ovora Outdoor, and we build custom cedar and modern fences across Wichita. When I drive past one of our jobs, the thing that makes me proudest is when it's the only fence in the area that looks the way it does.
What's the best custom privacy fence for a Wichita backyard?
Honestly, cedar. I really prefer it, and there's a lot you can do with it. The one that gets the most attention is horizontal cedar. Boards run side to side, a flat 2x6 cedar cap sits on top, and no posts show. It catches your eye because you just don't see it that often. We wrote a whole post on horizontal fence ideas.

Can you stain a fence to match your house?
Yes, and this is the biggest change you can make. Cedar takes stain in just about any color, so we can match the house or set it off. Our staining gets a lot of comments. Most people pick a darker tone or a reddish tone. The red is by far my favorite.
One thing nobody tells you: the rough side of cedar takes stain differently than the smooth side. It soaks in more, so it can come out a little deeper. That's why we bring real samples to your yard instead of picking off a screen.

What about a modern fence that isn't all wood?
Depending on the house, FenceTrac is a really cool look. It's a black powder-coated steel frame, and the boards slide in. Cedar, PVC or composite, horizontal or vertical. You can stain the cedar in it too, so the color still ties back to the home. If you never want to stain, Trex composite gives you clean lines with no upkeep. Both are on our modern fencing page, in 3D.
Is trim and cap a custom fence?
Not really. This is the most common mistake I see. People want something custom, then pick something super simple, like trim and cap. It's everywhere in Wichita already. It doesn't do much for the fence, and it can end up looking just as cheap as anything else. If you want the yard to stand out, go further than that.
Does a unique fence cost more?
Yes. I'd rather be straight with you. Material costs have skyrocketed over the last 10 years. If you want a custom look, you're going to pay for it. If you're on a tight budget and just need a fence that works, go standard. Nothing wrong with that. But most people are better off looking at something more creative.
What separates a nice fence from a great one?
The details. A gate that doesn't sag. A top line that's straight from one end to the other. Black hinges and a black latch on a stained gate. Those are the things I check when I drive by our jobs.
